NGC (VF) Roman AE1 / Nummus of Maximian AD286-310. Maximian, Roman emperor from 286 to 305 alongside Diocletian, rose from humble origins due to his military prowess. He quelled the Bagaudae rebellion in Gaul in 285 and engaged in campaigns against Germanic tribes and the Alamanni. Despite being declared Caesar in 285 and Augustus in 286, his role remained subordinate to Diocletian.
In 310, Maximian rebelled against Constantine in southern Gaul, falsely declaring Constantine's death in Arles. Fleeing to Massilia, he was captured by Constantine and stripped of his title for the last time. He was imprisoned and forced into suicide under questionable circumstances.
