NGC F - FINE - Roman AE4 of Leo I AD 457 - 474. Leo I, known as "the Thracian, " served as the Eastern Roman emperor from 457 to 474. Born near historic Thrace in Dacia Aureliana, he ruled for over 15 years and earned the epithet the Great. Leo was a capable leader who implemented effective political and military strategies, primarily focused on assisting the struggling Western Roman Empire and reclaiming its lost territories. A notable distinction is that he became the first Eastern Emperor to legislate in Koine Greek rather than Late Latin. Leo I is revered as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church, and his feast day is celebrated on 20 January. Certified, Graded and Encapsulated by NGC.
